Wieners and Cake

Not sure what to do today, we hopped into the car and just drove. Where did we go? We ended up in Connecticut. We checked out the two massive casinos, and then drove to the coast.

We drove through Historic Mystic, with its rich maritime history. Unfortunately, we weren't alone in thinking that today would be a good day to visit. The streets were packed with cars and pedestrians. While we wanted to stop for a stroll, the crowds were just too big.

So, we decided to head to Providence. We wanted a true authentic Providence experience. We got it!

Olneyville New York System is an institution in Providence. While they have a full diner-like menu, the one item everyone comes for is a Rhode Island Weiner. It is NOT a hot dog. And signs throughout the diner warn against calling it a hot dog, and threatens those who want to add ketchup. The weiner can be made 'all the way', which is what we got. Loaded with mustard, their signature meat sauce, a load of onions, and sprinkled with celery salt. And what better way to wash down the weiner than with a cold glass of coffee milk. This brought me back to my youth, and I discovered later that coffee milk is the official drink of Rhode Island.

In East Providence, a restaurant called Greggs serves legendary cakes and pies. We stopped in for a slice (not really a slice, but rather a mountain!) of their famous Death by Chocolate cake. Wow.
