Prior to driving out to Cape Cod, I was looking for a volunteer activity that I could do during our time at the Cape. Last year, I volunteered for the Falmouth Road Race, which was great fun. But the race is only one day of the year, and I was looking for more volunteer time opportunities.
And I found it.
The Falmouth Commodores is part of famous Cape Cod Baseball League - the premier wooden bat summer league for amateur baseball players. College-age players from around the country meet at the Cape to play from early June through early August.
There are 10 teams in the league: Falmouth, Wareham, Bourne, Hyannis, Cotuit, Yarmouth-Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Chatham and Orleans.
The Falmouth Commodores are one of the 4 original Cape Cod league teams that started in 1923 - and this year, they are celebrating their Centennial season.
I signed up to volunteer and help out in the Merchandise shack. This includes helping stock the supply of t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and souvenirs for sale during the games. It also means a lot of folding and refolding of shirts and sweatshirts.
Lisa attended the first day of sales, and quickly became a volunteer as well. We both LOVE working at the games, meeting people who attend the games, hanging out with other volunteers for the team, and most importantly, working with the student interns who are here for the summer to work for the team.
There are 22 home games, plus any potential playoff games. We have had a couple celebrity sightings, including legendary writer Peter Gammons (a regular on ESPN), and Jarod Saltalamacchia, former catcher for the Red Sox and now a coach for Bourne.
The games are like as true taste of Americana. Local singers performing the National Anthem. First pitch and the sounds of 'Play Ball' from recognized individuals. Fast pitch games for kids, a 50/50 raffle and bingo for the fans. Kids excitedly chasing foul balls as souvenirs. Locals from Falmouth and fans who have traveled from around the country (and world) to witness Cape Cod Baseball.
We could not have asked for a better summer volunteer job.
