Weekend in Suva and Sigatoka

Wednesday and Thursday nights at Yasawa were very special for us. We stayed in the super exclusive Lomalagi Honeymoon Bure. This bure is located at the very far end of the resort, past the beachfront Spa, and well past all of the other beachfront bures.

The Lomalagi Bure has a huge deck and a private pool. The beach in front of the bure is about as private as you can get. Reading on the lounge chairs, by the pool, with a view of the beach and ocean is just magical. What an amazing way to end our stay at Yasawa.

On Friday afternoon, we flew back to Nadi, where a truck was waiting for us in the parking lot. We drove down to Sigatoka, where we checked in to a local resort for the weekend. We walked from our hotel to a quiet Indian restaurant. The food and service were excellent, and the walk back to our hotel that night gave us some time to stretch our legs and plan our fun weekend away.

The weather decided to not cooperate. Saturday morning greeted us with stormy skies and heavy downpours. This would not stop us!

Our destination today was the capital city of Suva. Despite the rain, the drive to Suva was quite pretty, going through many traditional villages and admiring the lush green landscape. Our first stop in Suva was the Grand Pacific Hotel, a legendary hotel that has hosted world leaders for many decades. The photos of all the world leaders who have stayed at this impressive hotel are proudly displayed on the wall near the reception.

Across the street from the Grand Pacific is a huge park and rugby field. We drove by the impressive grounds of the Presidential Palace, before heading to the Fiji Museum. We loved the Fiji Museum, and learned a lot about the people, culture and rich history of Fiji.

For lunch, we wanted to visit Kanu, one of Suva's best restaurants, owned and operated by Fiji's premier chef Lance Seeto. The interior of this former colonial home is decorated with lots of Fiji history, including posters from the movies that were filmed in Fiji. Our lunch was delicious. After lunch, we slowly made our way back to Sigatoka, enjoying the sites along the way.

Sunday morning greeted us much nicer than Saturday, with clear sunny skies. Sigatoka is home to a national park - the Sigatoka Sand Dunes. Having driven by this site dozens of times, it was now time for us to see it for ourselves. We embarked on a short, but very hot hike to the dunes. The scenery was spectacular. The traditional shelters built on the sand. The loud crashing waves. The lush interior landscape. And a grove of trees filled with thousands of fruit bats, all seemingly yelling at us for interrupting their daytime sleep.

We drove up the Sigatoka valley, seeing the mountains, farmlands, and traditional homes and villages.

Tonight, we are staying up towards Lautoka, so we drove up through Nadi, stopping for lunch at our favorite cafe - The Coffee Hub. Awesome coffee and delicious breakfast and lunch offerings.

This was a fun weekend exploring Suva, Sigatoka and the Coral Coast area. This upcoming week, we will be hanging out in the Nadi area.
