Sabre Day Trip

Today was great fun!

Our Fiji adventure is quickly coming to an end, and we wanted to have a fun, relaxing day on the water. The Sabre catamaran day trip is just the thing!

We arrived to Port Denarau early, checking in to the South Seas Cruises desk and getting our wristband and instructions. Soon, we were aboard the Sabre catamaran.

First priorities? Remove your shoes, and grab a mimosa.

The super-friendly staff were soon serving a light breakfast, as we started sailing towards the Mamanuca Island chain. It could not have been a nicer day. Bright, sunny skies, calm seas, and the promise of a fun day on the water.

The sail over towards Malolo island was super smooth and beautiful. We anchored near an open-ocean sand bar. They handed out snorkel gear, and we were all in the water enjoying some snorkeling in the clear waters. We eventually swam over to the sand bar. When we stood on the sand, we were in about waist deep water. They had set up an open bar on a stand-up paddle board, complete with beers, wine and more. A small inflatable dinghy shuttled new supplies of beer and wine from the boat to the sand bar. This was one of the most fun happy hours we have enjoyed.

Time for lunch. A buffet lunch was served, with loads of options. We jumped back in the water to swim a bit more.

Now, there was only one last thing to do: nap.

On the sail back to Port Denarau, the crew grabbed some guitars and sang some Fijian songs. They then put on some music, and people were singing and dancing. A great atmosphere.

While boarding the boat this morning, a staff member approached me and asked about the Yasawa hat I was wearing. I told him we were there for a couple weeks, and he told me he is from the Yasawa village of Bukama, and that both his parents and many family members work at the resort. He insisted I take a photo and share it with his family and friends at Yasawa.

We normally do not do day trips like this, so it was a real treat. We were actually nervous that it would be too hokie, and way too touristy. Yes, it was touristy, but it was also great fun. We met some fascinating people from around the world. We chatted with the friendly crew. And we thoroughly enjoyed a very fun day on the water. The perfect way to end our Fiji adventure.
