The Journey East

Here is a summary of our 3-day journey from Arvada, Colorado to Falmouth, Massachusetts.

2020 miles.

30+ hours.

Ugh.

Our first day was an 11+ hour trip from Arvada to Iowa City, IA. It brought us through northeastern Colorado, across Nebraska, and 3/4 of the way through Iowa.

Northwest Colorado: Flat. Boring.

Nebraska: Wind. Stupid wind. Ridiculous wind. And trucks. And lots and lots of corn.

Iowa: Rolling cornfields.

We spent the night at an AirBnB in Iowa City. I am not sure what our expectations were, but this looks like a great city! Home to the University of Iowa, Iowa City is really quite pretty. Surprisingly, we found ourselves wishing we had more time to stay here. But alas, no. We arrived around 7p, unpacked the cars, grabbed some takeout, and went to bed early. Dinner tonight was an Iowa City classic: breaded pork tenderloin sandwich and a Big Grove Brewery beer. Maybe its good that we are not staying, as dinner took years off my life.

Day Two brought us another very early morning start. Pack the cars, hit the road by 7a. Our first stop: Iowa 80 - The World's Largest Truck Stop. We are paying between $4.50-$5.00 per gallon, so these stops end up being very expensive.

The drive for day two brought us through eastern Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and northwest New York. As you drive east, the speed limit changes, from 75 to 70 to 65. Traffic is getting much thicker. And drivers are a bit more aggressive.

We reserved another AirBnB in Buffalo NY. It was a super cool place, located in an old mansion. It was dated, but in a very cool neighborhood. We still had to unpaid the cars, as we didn't want all of our belongings in a car parked on the street overnight.

No, we did not get Buffalo Wings. We found a takeout sandwich place nearby and got sandwiches before going to bed early.

Day Three and another very early start. Remember, we left Colorado two days ago, and there is a 2-hour time difference. So, our 7a start was actually 5a Colorado time. We packed the cars, and immediately hit Interstate-90. Day 3 was the shortest drive - about 7 1/2 hours. By the time we hit the Massachusetts border, we were ready to just be there and be done with this journey.

We arrived to Cape Cod under very sunny skies, and immediately checked in to our rental cottage, which we will call home for the next 3 months. After a very quick unpacking, we drove to my brother's home in the neighboring town of Sandwich for dinner and beers on the deck. This was the first time in a long time that we had the opportunity to sit back and exhale.

We are here. And we are so ready and anxious to embrace Cape life.
