One of the things I love about driving in the Tucson area is the ever-changing landscapes. Dramatic mountains surround the city. Towering Saguaro cactus. Lush farmland. And our drive south from Tucson provided us with loads of changing landscapes.
Our first stop was as far as we could go: Nogales. Now, there are two Nogales. One in Arizona, and one in Mexico. But it really is, and should be, one town. The brooding border wall can be seen from miles away.
Just north of Nogales is the Tumacacori National Historical Park. We really only found out about this place from the list of parks/sights/monuments included in the America the Beautiful Park Pass.
The Tumacacori National Historical Park is an amazing refuge in the desert. Stunning natural areas surround the ruins of a mission church. There is even a grove of fruit trees planted and maintained by the University of Arizona.
In addition, Tumacacori is considered a Waystation for Monarch Butterflies during their annual migration.
Just north of Tumacacori is the arts village of Tubac. Tons of charming shops and plenty of opportunities to spend your money, and a cute stop on your way back to Tucson.
