Scuba Diving

Traveling to Yasawa from Colorado is not easy. It involves three flights, multiple long layovers, and traveling through timezones and across datelines. But it is so worth it. And this morning, we were greeted to a brilliant day, with incredible views, sunny skies, and powerful waves thanks to the full moon.

After a very leisurely breakfast by the pool, we decided to join some other guests for a morning of scuba diving. The dive team at Yasawa, led by Aku and his sister Masi, are so friendly, and it is boutique diving - they do all the work for you. All we had to do was show up at the dive shop with our masks. The gear was all loaded on the boat, awaiting our departure.

The seas were a bit rough today, due to the highest wave surges of the year. Massive waves were breaking offshore, and the waves eventually making their way to Yasawa would be the envy of any surfer. Our boat captain delivered us to the other side of the island. Along the way, we were able to see the famous Yawini beach - my absolute favorite beach.

Our first dive was at Fantastic. We quickly geared up, and once we got the OK from the captain, jumped into the water. On the descent, I caught a glimpse of a spotted eagle ray. We descended along the sheer wall, and quickly discovered how it got its name: loads of massive sea fans, gently swaying from the wall. There was a ton of small macro life on the wall, with plenty of colorful soft coral. I was happy as I found some anemone fish and playful clown fish. On our dive, we were joined by a guest doing his first resort dive. He went separately with Aku, as we were led by Masi. When we returned to the boat, he was beaming, bragging about the turtle and shark that he saw.

For our surface interval, we returned to the resort to drop off the resort dive guest, before heading to King David, a nearby dive site. Another beautiful wall dive, but with a bit more current. The big waves stirred up a lot of sediment, so visibility was not as good, but there was a ton of marine life to experience.

The diving at Yasawa was amazing. It was effortless diving, and we hope to do a bit more before we depart. There is nothing better than a relaxing, fun dive in the magical underwater world of Fiji.
