It is a beautiful Saturday, so a road-trippin we go.
Normally, you don't ever leave the Cape on a Saturday for fear that you will get stuck in brutal traffic. But, we departed early, and knew that we would be coming back late, so we would miss the bad traffic hours of 11a-6p.
Crossing the bridge from the Cape was a breeze, but traffic coming onto the Cape was at a standstill, and cars were stopped for miles.
Today's adventure was a visit to Providence RI. It is about a 1 1/2 hour drive to Providence, with our first stop being quite obvious: Narragansett Brewery.
After a quick beer sampler, we drove into downtown Providence. We visited the Roger Williams National Memorial (a small park downtown) and walked up the hill to check out some very cool old houses, and the monument to Roger Williams.
We continued our drive through downtown, going by the state capital building, and a quick stroll along the Riverwalk, where they offer gondola rides.
I wanted my family to have a full Providence experience, so we drove to East Providence for a Rhode Island Weiner and a Del's lemonade. If you know, you know.
A short drive from Providence, back across the Massachusetts border, is the historical city of New Bedford. Still very much a fishing community, New Bedford boasts a revitalized downtown area, with cobblestone streets and trendy restaurants. It has been decades since I visited New Bedford, and I was really impressed.
We visited the working piers, with some really impressive fishing vessels. I can only imagine the back-breaking work involved in making a living from the sea. The fishing boats were stacked three deep against the pier. Some of the rusted vessels looked too scary to take out on the water, yet I knew that this was the lifeline for so many local families. Much respect for the local fishermen of New Bedford.
