Our French Weekend

With the exception of pet-sitting for my brother, and a short business trip to Toronto, we have spent every night since we arrived to Falmouth at our cottage. This is very unlike us, as we like to take trips, both long and short, to get away and find adventures.

So, on a whim, we decided to schedule a weekend trip. Where to go? What to see? We have experienced much of New England. But there are some spots we have never visited. We ended our search with Quebec City. We have both dreamed of visiting Quebec City, and it seems like an ideal place to visit in early October.

We packed up the car, and really enjoyed our drive through Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and into Quebec. It is a bit too early for colorful foliage, but amazing views and charming vistas were around every corner.

We even had a chance to stop in St. Johnsbury, Vermont for a quick walk along the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail.

Crossing over the border, we had to adjust ourselves to kilometers-per-hour. It was a long trip from Falmouth to Quebec City (close to 8 hours with stops). Once we arrived to Quebec City, we quickly discovered that early October is prime tourist season. There is a crush of tourists in this city - many of whom arrived via the three huge cruise ships (including the massive Queen Mary 2) docked on the river.

Late afternoon was the perfect time to arrive, with beautiful sunset light. We walked around Old Quebec, and took in the beauty of the river, the surroundings, and the historical buildings. We also had to take photos of the Fairmont Hotel - the most photographed hotel in the world.

For dinner, we stopped at an outdoor cafe that is also a distillery - they make their own gin. We enjoyed very good gins and tonic, and we loved the presentation.

And, while in Quebec, we had to eat poutine!
