Monument Valley

If there is one quintessential image of the American West, it is Monument Valley. The classic backdrop for countless movies. The location that helps define the sprawling natural beauty of the west. And, at sunset and sunrise, a place of unimaginable beauty.

One of my travel goals was to witness Monument Valley at sunset. The reality was even better than the dream.

Personally witnessing the ever-changing colors of the these monumental pillars as the sun sets is a majestic experience. It is no wonder that this is the place where Hollywood comes to capture the American West.

There is not much around Monument Valley. Native American communities dot the landscape as you drive through the region. The only place we could find accommodation was at Gouldings Lodge - an historic lodge/resort nestled right up against the rocks. Famous American actors, including legendary John Wayne, stayed here while filming in the area. There is no better place to stay and experience Monument Valley. As excited as we were to experience sunset, we also wanted to be up before sunrise, so we could explore the area and witness another natural showstopper.

Due to Covid, the travel restrictions in the area were very tight. Only overnight guests were allowed to the resort area, and in order to get there we had to pass through a roadblock. There was only one restaurant open at Gouldings, so the decision on where we would enjoy dinner was made pretty easy for us.

Just before sunrise, we found a trail that leads behind the resort, towards an incredible area of natural rock formations. I imagine that during high season, this area must be quite busy. But we were so fortunate to have the entire place to ourselves. During this cool, crisp, clear morning, we sat and watched the sun crest over the horizon, and were enthralled as the rocks put on a display. The colors evolved, details were uncovered.

After our sunset hike, we drove north into Utah, allowing us to get even closer to these amazing rock formations. The sheer beauty and majesty of this area is almost overwhelming.

It is not easy getting to Monument Valley. And that is a good thing. A visit to Monument Valley should be deliberate, and it is deserving of your time and effort.
