Exploring Louisville

With one Distillery down, we decided to check out the area around Louisville. First stop was the Louisville Water Tower. They were setting up the adjacent area for a wedding ceremony. Great location right on the Ohio River.

Just down the road is the historical site Locust Grove. This is a Georgian mansion located on 55 beautiful acres.

On the drive towards downtown Louisville, we passed by Thurman-Hutchins Park, where we saw a large group of guys playing a cricket match in the open field. I couldn't resist, so we stopped by and I spoke with several of the players. They tried to explain many of the rules of play, most of which I have already forgotten. Cricket looks like a very civilized game, but any match that can take one week to finish, and even then not to have a winner, is a mystery for me.

Continuing our drive on River Road, we saw out of the corner of our eye the strangest building. We had to turn around and see for ourselves. The Heigold Facade. It is a facade (only the front of the building) of a 19th century mansion, that is adorned with immigrant patriotism. A strange site indeed.

Needing to get out and stretch our legs, we parked along the waterfront and walked across the Big Four Bridge. This is an old railroad bridge that has been converted to a beautiful pedestrian bridge that crosses the Ohio river. Towards the end of the bridge, I asked my wife if we should walk over and visit Ohio. She reminded me that it was actually Indiana. I'm an idiot.

After our walk, we were ready for lunch and perhaps a bit of bourbon. We parked the car in downtown Louisville (directly across from the Louisville Slugger Museum) and walked to lunch at Mussel & Burger Bar. We strolled along Main Street and walked by an amazing number of distilleries. Most were packed, probably due to this weekend's Bourbon Festival.
