Coonamessett Greenway Heritage Trail

This morning's hike is brought to you by the Coonamessett Greenway Heritage Trail. This trailhead was a bit further from our house than yesterday's hike - about a 3 minute drive. And for the most part, we had the hiking trails to ourselves all morning.

What an amazing location. The incredible diversity of birdlife and it's accompanying birdsong. A meandering stream through the wetlands. A series of rocky, sandy, grassy, and wooden bridge pathways.

The beauty of these wetlands abounds, with colorful wildflowers, tall grasses, and adjacent forests.

After exploring the paths of the Heritage Trail, we drove over to River Bend Conservation Area. While Coonamessett was wide open and expansive, River Bend is lush, overgrown with foliage on every side of the tight nature paths. We had to duck under low hanging branches. This location is also beautiful, but in different ways. The spongy, green mossy floor felt like we were walking on carpets. The soaring trees were surrounded by low bushes and flowers.

This was a short but lovely walk, and we had the entire place to ourselves. Knowing how busy the beaches must be on the 4th of July weekend, it is so nice to find a place of seclusion and reflection, so very close to home.
