Cape Cod Canal History

Paul

I have personally visited the Cape Cod Canal countless times. It always amazes me that this long (17+ mile) canal was man-made over one hundred years ago. It has been the location for many of our family picnics, camping weekends, fishing expeditions, and lazy strolls along the water.

The Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center is located near the mouth of the canal in Sandwich. It is a popular spot to watch the boats go through the canal, and has been popular with anglers for many decades. The Visitor Center has a museum focusing on the building and maintaining of the Cape Cod Canal. One of the most interesting things I read was that the Canal was first suggested by Miles Standish in 1623! It only took 300 years for the idea to come to fruition.
