Weekend in SMA

Another laid-back, relaxed weekend in San Miguel de Allende. However, there were a few things that happened that were very interesting.

Saturday was a hang out day. Reading, watching movies, and then going for a nice walk, in search of a lunch stop. We found some new streets to explore, and a new park - Parque Guadiana. This park is the epitome of the change in San Miguel - it was sponsored and built by English speaking ex-pats.

We found some cool areas, and a very nice, expensive, walled neighborhood that is obviously catering to the wealthy ex-pat community.

On the main road out of San Miguel, we came across a very new, modern Mercado - this is definitely for the expats. We were not really interested until we saw this on the menu - Chiles en Nogada. It is a stuffed poblano pepper covered in a walnut sauce. We have been looking for this since we arrived in Mexico in December. Funny to have found it in this hip market.

We split this dish, and decided we needed a bit more to eat, so we stopped by a local pizza place. Again, this is very hard to believe, but this is the first craft beer we have tried in Mexico.

Sunday morning was a repeat of Saturday. A late start, and a relaxing day.

However, when we started our walk, we noticed a LOT of people lined up on the sidewalks. This can only mean one thing: a parade.

Sure enough, drumming, loud music, and many characters parading in the street. There was a religious banner at the head of the parade, and I think it was some kind of neighborhood display of masks and outfits. Either way, there were a ton of people enjoying the spectacle.

Today was shopping day, so we walked to the large modern grocery store on the outskirts of town. On the way, we walked a bit in the city center, then we stopped for a quick lunch.

It was a really hot morning, but when we walked out of the restaurant, we noticed that it had gotten cloudy. We were excited. We have not seen rain for months.

When we returned to our house, we watched the storm build, with lots of lightning. Dark, ominous clouds everywhere. But not one drop of rain at our house.

We had a nice virtual happy hour with some friends back in Colorado. After, we decided we needed to go for a quick walk to stretch our legs. We have always enjoyed this display at our neighbors house, made even more interesting at night.
