Port, Mackerel and Hills

Paul

Our Porto adventure began with a late morning tour at Calem Vineyards, one of Porto's main Port producing companies. The port is stored in caves, on the other side of the river from Porto. It has been said that there is more alcohol stored in Porto than any place on earth. The tour was super informative, and the port tasting was delicious.

When we walked into Calem for the tour, it was raining hard. By the time we walked back outside, the skies were blue and the sun shining. A perfect day to stroll the waterfront.

We decided today was a day to explore. With comfortable shoes, we tackled the steep hills of Porto. Some amazing sights to see, some beautiful old buildings, great neighborhoods, and hidden gems around every corner.

All this walking made us super hungry. We found a tiny restaurant on a pedestrian street that had a great special: soup, bread, a glass of wine or beer, and a main course - all for 7 euros. I had a plate of horse mackerel that was so fresh and delicious.

We walked to the other side of Porto, and explored a famous church and monastery.

Across the square from the church was the Bishop's Palace.

If there is one thing we have learned about Portugal, it is this: it is VERY hilly. Good thing we are walking so many hills, because it gives us the chance to walk off all the delicious pastries we are enjoying here.
