The edge of Europe and beyond

Today, we drove out to the farthest point in southwester Portugal - the town of Sagres. There is no going further. West of here are the Azores islands, and beyond that is America. South of here is Morocco.

Sagres has a large fort on the ocean's edge. This part of Portugal has lots of amazing cliffs, and is very famous worldwide as a haven for surfing. Some of the largest waves ever surfed are off these shores.

We decided to take the slow road east, and explore some of the coastal regions. We found ourselves in the seaside fishing village of Budens. While it is a fishing area, it is also a touristy spot, with some amazing beaches.

We parked the car inland, walked to the beach, and strolled along the sand to find a beachfront restaurant serving delicious Portuguese dishes.

We continued our amazing drive west, passing through small villages with amazing ocean views. We eventually made it to Lagos to visit the very famous and picturesque Ponta da Piedade. This cliffside formation of rocks and arches is too beautiful to describe.

At the correct angle, the rock formation and arches looks like a heart. Appropriate for today, as it is our 31st Wedding Anniversary. A pretty remarkable place to enjoy our anniversary!

We depart tomorrow back to Lisbon, where we have a morning flight out the next day. Portugal has been everything we could have dreamed and more. After being kept away from Europe for so long due to Covid, we were thrilled to return. And one thing is for sure: we will be back in Portugal, very soon!
