When traveling, our preference is to always stay in an AirBnB. We love the experience of staying in local neighborhoods, in an apartment or house, which usually provides much more space and a much more local experience. We are currently in a one-bedroom apartment in Lisbon. Walking up our narrow street, you may be turned off by the ever-present graffiti. But, gems are found in even the most unexpected places.
Our apartment is on the 1st floor (2nd floor for us Americans). It is compact, very well decorated, and just perfect for two of us. When searching for AirBnBs, I use a couple of search criteria including dependable wifi, and access to a washing machine. This apartment has this and so much more. A cute balcony overlooks the narrow street.
Directly across from our apartment is a deserted building in varying degrees of decay. The interior seems to have rotted, but the exterior tiles are stunning. Each morning, I awake to a couple of pigeons who have made this their home.
The apartment can best be described as compact. It is very well designed, and it has some great touches throughout.
Our AirBnB host is wonderful. Great communication, and is very hospitable. We arrived to find a bottle of wine, some very nice local cheese and crackers, and even eggs for breakfast. This is definitely not a hotel. We are not being waited on by a staff. But we are living like locals, in a stylish apartment, surrounded by local Portuguese. It is nice to come back to an apartment and not be surrounded by tourists.
