Off the beaten path sights

This morning, we were very sad to say goodbye to our son, who had to leave a 5a for his 7a flight to Denver. We already miss him dearly.

I had to run to the local market for some supplies, and noticed that there was a protest march happening on Avenida San Cosme. I have no idea what they were doing, but there were loads of people in the street.

Today, we decided to walk to Centro and check out some off-the-beaten-path sights. To help us with this, we had found an awesome app for our phones: Atlas Obscura. This app highlights some different, sometimes strange sights that you may miss if not paying attention.

Our first stop was the Biblioteca de Mexico "Jose Vasoncelos". This is a beautiful library that houses the personal collections of some of Mexico's finest thinkers. The building is stunning, and the open spaces are amazing.

From the library, we walked down to Avenida Arcos de Belen, which is a vibrant, busy avenue. Several metro stops, Mercados, tons of shops, street vendors selling food and every item you can imagine, churches, government buildings, a Chinese market, and more.

At the Pino Suarez metro stop, we found the Pyramid of Ehecatl. It is not very large, and there is absolutely no signs. But it is a small, white pyramid that was found when the city was excavating for the metro system. We were able to see it from the subterranean level of the metro, and then from the open cutout from the nearby plaza. There was so much activity in the area, with so many food and shopping vendors, that no one seemed to notice or care about this ancient site.

Just up the street from the plaza is another interesting sight: an Aztec Serpent Head cornerstone on a building. This was put there by the Spaniards, after they stole it from the archaeological masterpiece sight of Tenochtitlan. It was placed at the bottom of this building as a not so subtle message that European conquest subdues native culture. Interesting to see here, but a very disturbing and disgusting message.

The crowds today are super heavy, with tons of people out enjoying the beautiful weather. We stopped in for a quick lunch, before walking around the Zocalo area. Too many people! So, we grabbed an Uber and headed back to our apartment. Dinner at home tonight. We have big plans for Thursday/Friday/Saturday, and we have to pack our belongings on Sunday as we are off to our next stop one week from today.
