Market, Museo and Drugs

Paul

Today was another day exploring central Oaxaca City. We visited the Centro area, and stopped by Mercado Benito Juarez and Mercado 20th Noviembre for lunch.

We found a nearby church we had not yet visited - there are so many churches everywhere in this city, and we thought we had seen most of them.

In the Zocalo, there was a protest, with speakers, flags, and chants. We still don't know what for, but there has been a weeks-long protest for women's rights and a protest focusing on violence against women.

A few blocks from the Zocalo is a popular pharmacy where we have seen many expats. Lisa wanted to get a couple things, including a prescription. She told the person behind the counter what she needed, and a minute later we walked out with a full box of her prescription meds. Very easy.

Next stop was the very modern Art Museum. Some very cool art, including pieces by Francisco Toledo who lived a few blocks north of here.

Time to head back to our house. But on the way, we heard some screaming. Walking by an open doorway, we saw a field house, where there was a basketball game with boys of high school age. I had to stop and watch a bit. These guys are tough and very physical. This game would never happen in the US. Lots of body checking, and it was obvious that they used their soccer skills for body placement and checking. It was great to see, as the crowd was really into it, yelling and screaming at every play.

Tonight's dinner was homemade tamales that were purchased at the Etla market yesterday. Yum!
