Hola Mexico!

Travel continues to amaze me. You would think that with all the traveling I have enjoyed over the years, that I would be jaded and take things for granted. Quite the opposite: I am so easily amazed at travel.

We departed Denver at 7a on Friday morning. Less than 4 hours later, we were in Mexico City, ready to begin our lengthy adventures. The flight arriving into CDMX shows just how enormous this massive city is, and the very unfortunate pollution that comes with both a huge population and a unique high-altitude setting.

What made this flight different was our belongings. We each had one carry-on rolling bag and we shared one large bag that we checked in on the flight. We are so used to rushing through Immigration and Customs and grabbing a transfer to our place. We now had to sit and wait for our bag to arrive at baggage claim. We are not used to waiting around like that, and the hour long wait was agonizing. However, once we saw our bag, we were both relieved and excited.

A 30+ minute Uber journey in traffic-packed Mexico City had us arriving to our apartment in the San Rafael neighborhood. Our 6-story apartment building is in a neighborhood, away from all signs of tourism. We are close to touristy areas, but we are firmly entrenched in a real, living, breathing Mexico City neighborhood.

We so wanted to unpack, make some small adjustments to the apartment, and get settled, but our rumbling stomachs informed us it was indeed time to eat. So, we quickly found one of our favorite CDMX restaurants - Casa de Tono. When we arrived, there was a long line at the door. We had to wait about 25 minutes before a table opened up for us. So worth the wait. The guacamole. The cold beer. The amazing tacos. Yum.

After lunch, we stopped by a neighborhood store for a couple simple supplies, and returned to the apartment. We unpacked, did some arranging, and have started to make this our home for the next month.

Tonight will be relaxed. Tired from traveling, full of yummy tacos and goodies, we are going to sit back, watch a bit of television, and call it an early night. Tomorrow, we can do a bit of exploring. Tonight, we just take it all in that we have arrived to CDMX.
