Groceries & Mercados

Have I mentioned how nice our house is in San Miguel de Allende? Wow. It is so, so nice.

This morning, we made coffee and breakfast, having purchased supplies from our neighborhood tienda last night. We needed more supplies, so we decided on our plan for the day: walk to the nice grocery store south of the city, then visit the nearby Mercado for lunch and more supplies.

We exited our house to the rough, cobbled streets. Brutal on our feet. We walked down the hill towards the main road, where we found plenty of shops, restaurants, and more. We meandered through some beautiful neighborhoods, and found ourselves on familiar streets that we recognized from our visit 5 years ago for Dia de los Muertos.

The La Comer grocery store is a long walk away, but in a very nice area. Tons of shops and restaurants in this area. The store itself is huge, and we took our time buying the necessities we thought we would need for the next week or so. We bought a lot of supplies, and spent quite a bit of money, but had some overflowing, heavy bags to justify it. We grabbed a taxi back to our house and unloaded.

About a 10-minute walk away is a traditional Mercado. It is not huge, but large enough with many food vendors and a few restaurant options. We picked a tiny 4-stool spot that was selling tamales. Green and red tamales with chicken. YUM!

We also found some fruit and vegetable vendors, and stocked up on some of our favorite stuff, including mangos, bananas, and more.

On the way back up the hill to our house, we found a small tortilleria. Perfect. For 10 pesos, we got a stack of tortillas that will last us days.

Tonight, we will have homemade guacamole, fresh salad, and pasta with meat sauce. After dinner, we will watch some Netflix in the upstairs lounge room.

Despite the very hilly area, we have all that we need within a few blocks of us. And if we can't find something, we can head to the modern grocery store for more provisions.

After our shopping expedition s we decided to head to the historic Centro area of SMA. It is pretty much a straight shot to the center - but a lot of uphill. A good workout for us both.

We walked by an open door and decided to pop in to visit the Casa del Mayorazgo de la Canal. This is a very cool museum in a historic home that is stunning. The rooms feature some amazing art. The house itself is truly a work of art.

One more block and we are in the main city plaza, with the beautiful gardens adjacent to the majestic Parroquiua San Miguel, the large pink and grey cathedral that dominates the skyline. It is a beautiful church, in a beautiful park, in a beautiful city.

We are so lucky to be back in San Miguel de Allende.
