Mexico is noisy. Oaxaca is noisy.
But the noise we experienced at our AirBnB was just too much to handle.
It is a beautiful space. We LOVE the AirBnB. It is just everything around it that is so hard. It is located on a very busy road, and the windows and front door are not very good, and they do not keep out any of the noise. Honking horns. Yelling vendors. Revving motorcycles. All hours of the day.
In addition, directly across the street is some major road construction. Starting early in the morning there are jackhammers, backhoes, concrete saws and a ton of activity. The dust generated has left everything in our AirBnB covered. To make matters worse, the guy next door is doing major construction on his place, which involves jackhammer and hammering on the floor and our shared wall.
It was just all too much.
So, we decided to leave. We were so very fortunate to have found an alternative accommodation - there was not much remaining for a last minute booking. We found a standalone house in a very residential area. There is an alley in front of our house, which has a large brick wall completely surrounding our entire complex. It is a big house - 4 bedrooms, 3 baths. We don't need this much space, but we do like the more subdued location. The owner of the house (Mariana) was here when we arrived and she is so awesome - she even invited us to her village (Etla) on Wednesday so she can show us around the market. The house is older and very traditional. It has nice outdoor spaces. Not the most modern house or neighborhood, but we'll take it.
Mariana told us that from Wednesday through Sunday, a neighbor opens up her house in the evening and serves homemade food. We could't resist. We walked over around 7p and got a couple of homemade quesadillas. Delicious and very local!
