Atzompa

Pretty much everyone who visits Oaxaca goes to the ancient ruins of Monte Alban. But across the valley from Monte Alban is a lesser-visited, but no less impressive Atzompa. Today was our day to visit.

We hired a taxi to take us to the top of the steep hill where the Atzompa ruins lie. We asked the driver to return in one hour (he did!). We walked up the rest of the hill, walked in to the free site, and discovered a gem.

The ruins here are incredible, and they are in amazing condition. There was pretty much no one there, and we had the place to ourselves. This was a huge difference from Monte Alban which was packed with tourists.

There were some signs and explanations of the different buildings and ruins. Everything was in amazing condition, and the views of the site and the neighboring mountains and valleys were incredible.

A one-hour visit was just about right. It is a shame that more people do not know about this amazing place, but I am just happy that we had the place to ourselves.

Sure enough, our taxi driver was waiting for us when we walked through the exit. We had him bring us to the Zocalo - we were craving lunch. Another delicious Smoke Alley lunch, followed by our favorite: Choco Mio!
