Atotonilco

About a 20 minute drive north of San Miguel de Allende is the village of Atotonilco, a very small town with a very big and important church. The Santuario de Jesús de Nazareno de Atotonilco is an important pilgrimage site in Mexico.

The church is highly decorated, with painted ceilings, carvings and statues. Many people call this the Sistine Chapel of Mexico.

We decided to take a short walk around the town, and noticed that buses were starting to arrive, bringing visitors to the church.

The town itself is very sleepy, and there are some cool old churches, buildings and shrines.

Just on the edge of the village is the Finca La Devocion. This is a local function venue, complete with a boutique hotel, a small church, a reception hall, and most importantly a mezcal bar. The restaurant will not be open for another couple months, but it was cool walking around this beautiful property. It is adjacent to the ancient aquaduct that had delivered water to Antotonilco.

After exploring this area, we wanted to return to San Miguel. But how? No phone service, and we are outside of the Uber service area. So, we walked up to the bus stop, and flagged down the next city bus back to the city. We checked out the main square, which was so quiet compared to yesterday's amazing events. We found a very quiet courtyard restaurant for a casual lunch, and returned home for the day. After the noise, crowds and events of yesterday, today was a nice, quiet respite.
