Art & History in SMA

Art is everywhere in San Miguel de Allende. Even on our street, with the above painting on someone's house.

There is natural art as well, including our friendly neighborhood hummingbird that loves to take a bath in our fountain every morning.

We decided to visit three places in the city known for some cool art. Our first stop was the Biblioteca Publica. This very cool building is in the middle of Centro, and is a very popular spot for expats. The number of English speaking books may even outnumber the number of Spanish books. We saw a group of ladies seemingly in the middle of a book club, older retired couples enjoying coffee at the cafe, writers hunched over their laptops. This is a very popular library, and they have an amazing used bookstore attached with loads of English language books. We now know where all the expats are shopping.

When we first visited San Miguel in 2018 for Dia de los Muertos, we visited the famous Belles Artes, but it was mostly closed off, and fully decorated for the holiday. Today's visit to this beautiful building was very different. Rooms with art displays. Spaces with murals. Public art in the open courtyard. And, the famous unfinished mural by artist David Siqueiros, who started this mural but abandoned it after political differences with the owner.

Our next stop before lunch is the historical museum directly next to the cathedral - Museo Historico Casa de Allende. This home of Ignacio Allende has historical furnishings and paintings, and even the old pharmacy with hundreds of ceramic jars.
