We only have a few days remaining in Mexico City, so we went through our list of places we hadn't had a chance to visit, and picked a destination. Today, we headed to the east entrance of Bosque de Chapultepec to visit the Centro de Culture Digital museum. We have been here three times, and it has been closed three times.
You know you are there when you find the massive tower covered with marble and lights. It has been considered a boondoggle and a classic case of corruption, as it was a stupidly expensive monument to the revolution that seems to be quite unpopular in the local community. Below the tower is the museum. Not much here. But we did find one gem in the subterranean level.
Underground is a large, stark white room, with six pillars in the middle, and metal artwork. The dark surroundings and ring of light is unsettling. After reading the description of the room, it is meant as a sound and light experience. Unlike every piece of artwork and sculpture we have seen over the past month, this art is meant to be touched, hit, and used to create sound. And the sound created is unreal. It echoes through the room, and the lights change intensity based on the sound. Here are two examples:
OK. Enough underground time for us. As we departed, we noticed two things: metal plaques in the ground honoring missing political prisoners, and a square that seems to be the only place in all of Mexico where it is OK to smoke marijuana.
Time for a stroll through one of our favorite areas: Condessa. This is such a lovely neighborhood, with awesome apartments, trendy restaurants, beautiful parks, and a fun and relaxed experience. We passed by some public art, some churches, parks and more. There were a TON of dog walkers out today, and we are continually amazed at how well-behaved the dogs are here. We saw a group of six dogs sitting quietly in the middle of the park, all tied together but not tied to anything to keep them there. They were just lying there, watching the world go by, being good boys and girls.
For lunch, we wanted another change of pace. So today was Vietnamese. We found a Pho restaurant that also made a unique Vietnamese Ramen. We had one of each. Delicious.
If you are watching any TV lately, you will have seen ads for the new HBO show The Last of Us. Well, whoever is in charge of their advertising deserves a raise. They took over an entire street corner with some amazing art. There was a zombie growing out of the wall; a car with some strange noises emanating from it; a phone booth covered in ivy. It is a huge hit, and there were loads of people stopping to take photos.
Our last stop today was one of our absolute favorite parks: Parque Mexico. A beautiful park, with so many places to sit, take in a bit of nature, do some people watching, and just relax. We love it here!
Tonight, we are taking it easy. We have a big two days ahead of us. Tomorrow is our next overnight adventure. We are heading to the magical town of Taxco!
