This is the last day we have our rental car, so we decided to drive south of Puerto Vallarta. What a stunning journey!
The drive is hilly, curvy and beautiful, with lush tropical rainforest on one side, and amazing ocean views on the other side. There is a ton of development south of the city, with condos, apartment towers, and cliffside homes.
Our first stop was Boca de Tomatlan. We had seen on the map that there is a beach located here, but it is less a beach than a disembarkation point to explore other areas. There are a ton of boats and aggressive boat owners asking if we wanted to hire a water taxi to visit nearby sites like Yelapa beach, or Playa Colomitas. There was a lot of activity, with people renting boats, supplies being loaded onto boats, and a lot of marine traffic throughout the bay. It is a pretty spot, with a river flowing to the ocean, but there was a lot of activity.
We decided that we needed some beach time. So, we headed to Playa Mismaloya. While there were a lot of people here, we were able to find our own spot on the beach to sit back, throw a frisbee, do some reading, swim, and relax. We walked up the beach towards some of the boats and restaurants and were immediately hounded by locals selling their services. Very overwhelming. We picked a quiet restaurant at the end of the beach for some beers and lunch.
There is a concrete path along the southern edge of the bay that allows for beautiful views of the entire bay and the nearby islands. There is a monument to the famous movie Night of the Iguana, which was filmed nearby.
We returned to our condo for a quick swim in the pool before returning the car. Tonight's dinner was a couple of rotisserie chickens from the local vendor, along with some vegetables and fresh tortillas. Another relaxing evening playing cards as we witnessed a beautiful sunset. We are loving the pace of Puerto Vallarta!
