Oaxaca !

And we're off.

For two people who so very rarely check a bag at the airport, we were very much out of practice. We have one checked bag, and two carryons that hold all of our belongings. Not sure when to arrive, we got the the Mexico City airport almost 3 hours early. Come to find out, checking a bag and going through security took about 20 minutes. Oh well. We enjoyed a nice, slow, relaxing breakfast at an overpriced airport restaurant before our flight to Oaxaca.

The flight was beautiful. We could see the volcanoes. We could see the lush mountain countryside. And the flight was fast - under one hour.

We arrived to stunningly beautiful skies and a clean, fresh air. The Oaxaca airport is small. For the largest city in this state, it is really small, with only one baggage carrousel. Grabbing our bags, we headed to the taxi stand and grabbed a Colectivo (a van bringing multiple people to different stops).

Thankfully, our AirBnB was open and available to us, so we immediately arrived and started unpacking.

What a great place! We LOVE this AirBnb. It is modern, with a great open layout. Comfy beds, very comfy couches, a huge kitchen with a desk for my computer, super fast wi-fi, and an outdoor patio (but on a very busy street).

Unpacking gets me hungry. So, we headed over to nearby Mercado de Merced. We quickly found a restaurant, where we had a great lunch - chili rellenos and an amazing chicken soup.

While at the Mercado, we stopped at a fruit/veg stand and bought some supplies to get us started. We also visited a local Tortilleria, and the couple who run it are lovely. This amazing amount of fresh produce was about $4.

On the block behind our apartment is the huge general cemetery. It is massive. And the gravesites are incredible. From home-made gravesites and signs, to towering family tombs, it is an incredible place, and we will surely visit many times to take it all in.

For now, we stopped around the corner from our apartment to get some beers from the local vendor (who was incredibly friendly), and returned to our apartment for a good night's rest. Oaxaca is very cool so far, and we can't wait to really start exploring.
